Group Theory
Practical Theory
This class is for participants of any level who might find themselves asking: How do keys work, and what are they? What is major vs minor? What is the difference between D major, D minor, D7, and—Heaven forbid—D7b5 chords? Why do certain chords seem to go together? Why is 6/8 different than 3/4; What exactly is harmony? No prior knowledge of music theory is necessary, but participants should be familiar with the first seven letters of the alphabet.

Level 4 theory:
In RCM Theory 4, we will explore the concepts of major and minor scales, time signature, simple meters, rules for adding rests, intervals, and triads. Students will learn how to write two-octave major and minor scales in both bass and treble clefs, identify different simple meters, add rests to complete the measures, recognize and write intervals of non variable quality, construct major and minor triads in root position, and build triads using different scale degree notes. We will also introduce some basic ideas of music composition. Students will be able to write simple four-measure melodies by the end of the course. The goal of the course is for students to use the acquired theory knowledge to further understand the music that they play and hear.
Time: Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 pm, 15 weeks starting Jan 7th
Cost: $300
