About Us

a cello teacher and three cello students practicing together

The Prince George Conservatory of Music is a non-profit music school and the largest music educator in Northern British Columbia, serving Prince George, Vanderhoof, Quesnel, and the Robson Valley since 1984. The PGCM is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh. We have been a chapter member of the British Columbia Association of Community Music Schools since 1987.

The Conservatory offers our community a curriculum that takes the students from a beginning level to professional level. We do this through private instruction with professional teachers and performers, as well as group settings where the students advance from the fundamentals of group ensemble playing to professional orchestral training.

Music is an essential part of anyone's education and life experience. Learning an instrument can improve concentration, coordination, character (through diligent practice), self-confidence (through performance), appreciation of different kinds of music, and ability to express ideas and emotions. In other words, a quality music education can provide the tools needed for success in life. And that's not even mentioning the life-long love of music that will be created or the possibility of a career in music!

Our Vision:

Music for Everyone: Discovering, Creating, Educating

Our Mission:

We are here to help people in our community achieve their full potential as musicians and as human beings.

We share our passion through music education and exploration with opportunities for creative expression, performance and community building.

Prince George Conservatory of Music Statement on Equity and Anti-Racism

The Prince George Conservatory of music acknowledges the legacies of racial oppression, violence and exclusion that are a part of our history and shape our current world. We are committed to supporting the dismantling of structures that perpetuate racist and social inequities through actions - both immediate and future - to direct our organization, its resources and programming, to drive positive change.
We unequivocally believe that Black and Indigenous lives matter, and oppose racism against Black, Indigenous and all people of colour as well as discrimination in all forms against 2SLGBTQ+ people, and those with stigmatized identities and disabilities. The PGCM Board and staff are committed to providing a learning and working environment in which all people are respected and that is free from discriminatory and intimidating behaviour. The Prince George Conservatory of Music will take action against racism by:

  • Ensuring that all events hosted at the PG Conservatory include an acknowledgement that the PGCM operates on the traditional unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation.
  • Ensuring that official correspondence includes an acknowledgement that the PGCM operates on the traditional unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation.
  • Providing education and development opportunities for our staff and Board that raise awareness of systemic racism, implicit bias, and micro-aggressions, while promoting cultural sensitivity, justice and inclusion.
  • With our programming, acknowledge the historic lack of representation of the work of Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+ and artists of colour and actively support these artists’ work now and in the future.
  • Building a workforce that is reflective and representative of our diverse community with policies and practices that are committed to equity and inclusivity. This includes ensuring anti-racism HR policies and racial-equity training and resources provided for all staff.

For our next steps, the PGCM commits to developing policies and procedures to support us in accomplishing these goals. We also commit to undertaking regular reviews of our practices, policies and procedures and providing updates on our progress in achieving these objectives.
